Service dog training is interesting
Service dog training is interesting because I have done research on the subject. Do you know that it costs between $30,000 to $50,000 to train a dog for the duty of service dog?
They mostly use rescue dogs for the training. So we came across this service dog training program. We got the dog right away and we were in training for a year we still have a year to go. You can start the training about 6 months old up to three years old after that the dog is too old for training.
It is an interesting training but it is good though. If you don’t think you can train for service you can because they take you step by step in the training. Because we need service dogs for the disable and for the military that have retired.
Working dogs are not pets
These dogs are working dogs they are not pets. When these dogs are working no one is allowed to touch them because they are working for their partner. These dogs are becoming more popular for military personnel because of PTSD. These dogs are so well trained to do remarkable things.
How I got involved with service dogs when my husband became disabled, he had PTSD and other medical issues. He needed a service dog. We went to shelters and one shelter gave a brochure about service dogs. So I had contacted the person and he gave me contact information for another person who deals with the service dogs.
We went to the training facility and met with him and he had explained the program to us, and we gave him our information. He told us it would be a wait but we got our dog in January of last year at 15 months old. He is now 2 years old and he is doing fine just rusty. After he is trained I will get my service dog. I too have PTSD as well as other medical issues.
My personal experience with working with service dogs is doing the training. We are in a two-year training program. The training is you take your dog to the specialized training facility and you are training him through a professional trainer.
It takes a lot of patience
It is hard and it takes time and a lot of patience. The reason it is hard is trying to keep the dogs’ attention. They are not dumb they are very smart dogs they just have short attention spans.
Right now we have a rescue dog he is a Golden Labrador retriever that had to belong to two other military personnel and they could not take care of him any longer, because of the way they were working. So we got him and he is a great dog but I have been out due to surgery so we got to get him back in shape before we go back to training.
Service dogs can be a therapy dog
These dogs are well needed as service dogs as well as therapy dogs. Now a service dog can be a therapy dog as well. A therapy dog cannot be a service dog only because the training is different they are only trained to be a therapy dog. Whereas a service dog is trained for everything. It is best to get a service dog that is the better way of going. This is also service dogs training for the disabled.
You want mid-size to large breed dog, you don’t want a Rottweiler. Doberman, that is to mention just two of the dogs you don’t want. To mention two of dogs you do want is Golden Labrador Retriever, German Shepard.
You have to be careful of the dog you choose because the trainer has to look at the dog first before excepted into the program. You have to research this topic online because there is a lot of programs out there.
The working dogs either service dogs or guide dogs are very special. They both do a lot for their handlers. They both wear a harness for the service dogs it is for stability and for the guide dogs is so the blind handler has something to hold on to.
The handler and dog are partners
They work hard for their partners. We have to make sure that these dogs are taken care of. Both types of dogs do the same thing for their partners. They get different things when asked for it. They can open electric doors, turn on the light for their partners.
If their handler gets into medical trouble the dogs know what to do. The dog will warn their partner if their about to have a seizure, diabetes shock, or low sugar, or even high sugar. These dogs are highly trained and they can determine what will happen. It is all due to the training that they receive.
Remember to adopt from your local shelter. They need love and homes too.
